The American Association for Justice (AAJ) recently partnered with other like-minded organizations to sponsor a nationwide awareness campaign called, “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Distracted.” Along with Students Against Drunk Driving and End Distracted Driving, AAJ invited teenagers across the country to submit videos and memes that highlight the dangers of distracted driving.
The campaign featured several categories for submission. Videos and memes could target the role of friends in preventing distracted driving, the negative social stigmas associated with the practice, the selfish nature of distracted driving, and the role that parents and siblings play. Several celebrities took part in the effort to judge entries and determine which ones were the best. Notable judges included Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek and ESPN personality Nikky Williams, among others.

Furthermore, women who attend are encouraged to bring the men in their lives who stand with them.
The 2017 SF Men for Choice (And the Women Who Love Them) Happy Hour will take place on May 18 at Tank 18, a winery located in San Francisco
New Mexico Wilderness Alliance
Practicing with McGinn, Carpenter, Montoya & Love, P.A., Kathleen (Kathy) Love brings over 20 years of experience as an attorney to the Albuquerque-based law firm. Kathy Love has many interests outside of practicing law. She is a founding member of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.
The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring, preserving, and protecting New Mexico’s wilderness and wildlands areas. In existence since 1997, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is committed to building the community and raising awareness of wildlife issues throughout the state.
In June 2016, the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Conservation Act was reintroduced, ensuring the protection of eight wilderness areas within the area designated as a national monument. The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks hosts 306 different types of birds along with 78 mammal species, including peccaries, mule deer, and cougars. A recent poll administered by the Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce showed that 78 percent of residents support the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks protection effort.
Peer Review Ratings System
For more than two decades, Kathleen “Kathy” Love has been practicing as an attorney. A graduate of DePaul University College of Law, Kathy Love serves as a partner at McGinn, Carpenter, Montoya & Love, PA, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As testament to her talent, she belongs to Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, and is an AV-rated attorney with Martindale-Hubbell.
For more than 100 years, Martindale-Hubbell has been ranking professionals in the legal field. The organization’s Peer Review Ratings are considered the gold standard for lawyer rating and helped individual lawyers and law firms stand out from their competition. Peer ratings are determined solely by peer references. Martindale-Hubbell maintains a peer-review process that involves gathering information about a lawyer’s ethical standards and performance based on fellow lawyers in their practice area. Each rating has a minimum threshold that lawyers must pass before earning the rating.
There are three different peer ratings that professionals can earn: Martindale-Hubbell Notable, Martindale-Hubbell Distinguished, and AV Preeminent. Notable ratings indicate that a lawyer has been recognized by their peers as having strong ethical standards while the Distinguished rating indicates a lawyer is experienced and widely respected for both their ethical standards and professional achievement. The AV rating is the highest peer rating available and is reserved for lawyers who possess the highest level of professional excellence in terms of communication skills, ethics, and knowledge.
Save the Otero Messa Grasslands
Albuquerque-based attorney Kathleen Love of McGinn, Carpenter, Montoya & Love has been practicing law since 1995. Since her early days as a public defender, Kathy Love has put her skill as an attorney to work helping Albuquerque’s most vulnerable communities. Outside of her obligations as an attorney, Kathy Love protects the wilderness surrounding Albuquerque through the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, which she helped to create.
The state of New Mexico owes much of its culture, resources, and success to the natural beauty it houses. The New Mexican wilderness is vast, and home to iconic species that thrive in few other places. Unfortunately, many parts of the state are at risk due to human activity. The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring these lands so that they can be enjoyed by humans and animals for generations to come.
The organization is currently running several campaigns to protect the most at-risk areas in New Mexico. One of these campaigns centers on the Otero Mesa Grasslands, a diverse area within the Chihuahuan Desert. Home to 200 species of songbirds, many eagles, and all manner of mammalian and reptilian life, these grasslands also house the strongest herd of pronghorn antelope in the region.
Unfortunately, mining and drilling jeopardize this once pristine region. The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is working against dangerous mining and exploratory drilling practices in the area, hoping to curb these activities before they destroy a state treasure.
American Academy of Pediatrics
Albuquerque attorney Kathleen “Kathy” Love shares a love of sports with her husband and son, Xavier. The three love watching all sports, but the house rule is that Xavier will never play football because of the risk of head injury. Kathy Love’s concern is well-founded. In the fall 2015 season, 11 high school students died playing football.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) found that tackle football increased the likelihood of concussions and catastrophic injuries, and that eliminating tackling from the sport would reduce the incidence of these injuries. Instead of recommending the elimination of tackling, however, the AAP suggested an increase in adult supervision, instruction in proper tackling procedures, and neck strengthening exercises. These recommendations were made despite the fact that no systematic evidence shows that safer tackling techniques reduce the incidence of concussions. Tackle football has become the norm for high school teams, but many feel the risk of head injury is too great to expose young people.
NARAL Pro-Choice America
Albuquerque-based attorney Kathleen Love practices with the law office of McGinn, Carpenter, Montoya & Love. Like the other attorneys at her practice, Kathy Love focuses on protecting vulnerable people in the Albuquerque community. Alongside her duties as an attorney, Kathy Love supports women in Albuquerque and New Mexico at large through her local support of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
NARAL Pro-Choice America is a national organization of men and women who have come together to protect a woman’s right to make choices about her own reproductive care. Members work tirelessly to protect and expand reproductive freedom through the political process.
NARAL organizes state-by-state, working collaboratively to lobby Congress, elect lawmakers who share pro-choice values, and fight against those who would attempt to take freedoms away from American women.
One of the organization’s current efforts involves fighting back against some of Planned Parenthood’s most recent attackers, such as Representative Marsha Blackburn. The Republican from Tennessee recently issued subpoenas that prevent fetal tissue research. These policies hinder scientific progress and jeopardize the careers and lives of American scientists engaged in legal research.
