Equal Access to Justice – Helping People

A partner with McGinn, Carpenter, Montoya & Love, PA, Kathleen “Kathy” Love has worked as an attorney since 1995. In addition to her work as a civil practice attorney, Kathy Love is also a member of the American Association for Justice and supports the New Mexico-based Equal Access to Justice (EAJ).

Established in 1988, the nonprofit organization Equal Access to Justice is committed to providing civil legal help to New Mexicans in need. Comprised of the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty, New Mexico Legal Aid, Law Access New Mexico, and DNA—People’s Legal Services, the organization has raised more than $3 million in support for cases on tribal issues, consumer issues, and water rights, among other issues, since its founding.

Supported primarily by individual donations, EAJ encourages legal professionals to fund pro bono initiatives, provides grants for low-income civil legal services, and raises public awareness for its services. Significantly, civil legal aid has been shown to save public money, as it helps improve the lives of those in need and reduce the amount spent on assistance programs and health care. EAJ also helps people understand and engage in federal programs like SNAP and supplemental security income.
